How Often Should You Clean Your Exhaust Fan?
Ideally, you should clean your bathroom exhaust fan every 3-6 months. If you have a busy bathroom or live in a humid climate, you may need to clean it more frequently.
What You'll Need
- Screwdriver (usually a Phillips head)
- Vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment
- Small brush (an old toothbrush or a small cleaning brush works well)
- Damp cloth or cleaning wipes

- Safety First: Turn Off the Power! This is the most crucial step. Locate the circuit breaker that controls the bathroom and flip it to the "off" position. Double-check that the fan is indeed off by trying the light switch (if it's connected to the same circuit) or by carefully checking the fan itself.
- Protect Your Work Area: Lay down a drop cloth or newspaper beneath the fan to catch any falling dust and debris.
- Remove the Cover: Most bathroom exhaust fans have a cover that's held in place by screws or clips. Carefully remove the screws using your screwdriver. If there are no screws, look for tabs or clips that you can gently press or slide to release the cover.
- Vacuum the Dust: Using the hose attachment on your vacuum cleaner, carefully remove the accumulated dust from the fan housing, the fan blades, and the cover itself. Pay close attention to the crevices and hard-to-reach areas.
- Scrub the Blades and Cover (If Necessary): If there’s stubborn dirt or grime on the fan blades or cover, you can use a small brush and a damp cloth or cleaning wipe to clean them. For tougher grime, you can dissolve a HeySunday detergent sheet in water and soak. Make sure to rinse and thoroughly dry all parts before reassembling.
- Clean the Fan Housing: While the cover is off, take the opportunity to vacuum and wipe down the inside of the fan housing.
- Reassemble the Fan: Once everything is clean and dry, carefully reattach the cover. Make sure it’s securely fastened with the screws or clips.
- Turn the Power Back On: Flip the circuit breaker back to the "on" position.
- Test the Fan: Turn on the bathroom light or the fan switch to ensure it’s working correctly.
