So, do laundry detergent sheets actually work?
Yes. Laundry detergent sheets can work effectively in cold water. But—and this is the part that matters—the fact that a detergent comes in a sheet doesn't automatically make it better or worse at cleaning.
Whether you're using a sheet, liquid, or another type of detergent, cleaning performance depends on the formula, the water temperature, the hardness of your water, the wash cycle, and how much detergent you're using.
In other words, a detergent doesn't have to feel harsh to get your clothes clean.
And a gentler detergent isn't automatically ineffective.
The goal is finding a formula that gives you enough cleaning power without creating other problems, like excessive fragrance, residue, or that “I used way too much detergent” feeling.

What does “cold water” actually mean?
This sounds obvious, but stay with me: cold water isn't necessarily the same temperature from one house to another.
Your washing machine might simply have a “cold” setting, but the actual temperature of that water depends on where you live, the season, and even the pipes bringing water into your home.
For example, cold tap water in the middle of winter can be considerably colder than cold tap water during the summer.

That means your “cold” wash in July isn't necessarily giving your detergent the same working conditions as a “cold” wash in January.
This is especially useful to remember if your laundry seems to come out perfectly clean for most of the year but starts looking a little dull once the weather turns cold.
Before assuming your detergent suddenly stopped working, look at the water temperature.
Why can cold water make cleaning harder?
There are two big pieces of the puzzle: surfactants and enzymes.
You don't need to remember the chemistry terms to understand what they're doing, but knowing the basics can help explain why one load comes out beautifully clean and another doesn't.
Surfactants help lift dirt and oils
Surfactants are some of the main cleaning ingredients in laundry detergent. They help loosen oils, dirt, and grime from your clothes so those particles can be carried away in the wash water.
For surfactants to work properly, they need to dissolve and form structures called micelles.
Every surfactant has a temperature range where it dissolves and behaves most effectively. Below a certain temperature—known as its Krafft point—some surfactants become much less soluble.
The Krafft point is the minimum temperature at which a surfactant forms micelles. Below it, the surfactant stays crystalline in the water rather than dissolving into cleaning structures, and the solution turns cloudy. Every surfactant has one.
Excess surfactant does not fully rinse out, it stays in the fibers, and it holds moisture and odor. Cut your usual dose by about a third, and strip the towels once with a hot rinse-only cycle and no detergent at all before you go back to normal washing.

One commonly studied surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate, has published Krafft-point values roughly in the 9°C to 18°C range, depending on the conditions and study. One standard reference gives a value around 16°C, or about 61°F. That matters because winter tap water in some parts of the country can get surprisingly close to that range.
And here's the important part for our laundry-sheet-versus-liquid question:
This isn't unique to detergent sheets. The same basic chemistry applies to surfactants used in liquid detergents too.
Can enzymes slow down in colder water?
Many laundry detergents also use enzymes to tackle specific types of stains.

That's the distinction that gets lost in a lot of laundry advice.
A note on "plant-based," since it comes up constantly
It's tempting to assume plant-derived ingredients are automatically mild and petroleum-derived ones are automatically harsh. The chemistry doesn't work that way.
Sodium dodecyl sulfate, for instance, is commonly produced from coconut or palm kernel oil—genuinely plant-derived—and it's still a robust cleaning surfactant. Meanwhile, plenty of gentle ingredients are made synthetically.
What determines how a surfactant behaves is its molecular structure and how much of it is in the formula—not what it was originally made from. Plant-derived is a sourcing and sustainability question, and a good one. It just isn't a shortcut for predicting performance or mildness.
This is worth knowing because it means you can't judge a detergent by whether the label says "plant-based." You have to look at what's actually in it.
Not All Detergent Sheets Are the Same: Which One Is the Best?
This is probably the single most useful thing I can tell you, and it's the thing almost no laundry article says out loud.
"Detergent sheet" describes a format, not a recipe.
Two sheets that look nearly identical in the box can contain completely different surfactant systems, different enzymes—or no enzymes at all—different water-softening ingredients, and wildly different concentrations of each.
Comparing "sheets" to "liquid" is a bit like comparing "cans" to "bottles." It tells you about the packaging. It tells you very little about what's inside.
Liquid detergent is mostly water, which is wasteful from a shipping standpoint. But that water does a job: it keeps the enzyme system dissolved and stable, and it lets you scale the dose. A packed load of towels and a small load of pillowcases need different amounts of cleaner, and with liquid you just pour more. A sheet is a fixed dose. One sheet is one sheet. That is usually where people notice sheets underperforming, not because the chemistry is weak, but because they used the same amount of it on twice the laundry.

Some sheets contain a single surfactant and a binder, and not much else. Worth being straight about the trade-off, though: citrate is a weaker chelator than either phosphates or EDTA. Detergent formulation literature is consistent on this point. It genuinely helps, and it's a meaningfully better environmental choice. It does not make hard water stop being hard.
Which is the honest version of the answer: if your water is very hard, a citrate-built detergent will perform better than one with no water-softening ingredient at all, and it still won't fully solve the problem on its own. Addressing the water itself does more than switching detergent brands.

Fragrance is worth thinking about separately from cleaning, because it does a different job. It doesn't make anything cleaner. It makes laundry smell a particular way, and whether you want that is genuinely a preference rather than a performance question.
It's also the ingredient category most commonly associated with skin sensitivity, which is why fragrance-free versions exist.

Which detergent gives you the cleaning performance you need while fitting the way your family actually does laundry?
If you have sensitive skin or are eco-concious, you may prefer a gentler formula—which is where laundry sheets have an edge, as they typically offer both gentler ingredients and eco-friendly options. Switching to a fragrance-free version is also a great approach to try.
If you have kids, you likely care more about getting food, sweat, grass, and mystery stains out of clothes. Examining the ingredients to strike the right balance is essential, as protecting kids' skin and avoiding harsh chemicals is just as important. Following some practical laundry tips to make the process more efficient can also be a great alternative to hunting for the "perfect" product or relying on harsh chemicals that might affect the whole family.
If you're washing mostly everyday clothing, cold water may be your go-to.
