Laundry detergent sheets and liquid detergent both get clothes clean. The difference is everything around the wash. Sheets come pre-measured, weigh almost nothing, can't spill and ship without a plastic jug. Liquid is easier to pour onto a stain and often costs less per load if you measure exactly. For most households, sheets are the easier switch.

Below is how they compare on cleaning, cost, machines, storage and waste. If you're weighing up other formats, we also compare laundry sheets vs pods and laundry sheets vs powder.

Do laundry sheets clean as well as liquid?

Yes, a good sheet cleans as well as your old detergent. A sheet is concentrated detergent dried into a thin film, so the same kinds of cleaning ingredients are doing the work: surfactants that lift dirt and oil, and enzymes that break down protein stains like sweat and food. HeySunday sheets include protease, an enzyme for exactly those stains.

What decides the result is using enough. Use 1 sheet for a small load, 2 for a medium load and 3 for a large or heavily soiled one. If a load ever comes out less clean than you expected, check the number of sheets against the size of the load first. Our guide to how to use laundry detergent sheets has the full dosing table.

Plenty of our customers were doubtful before they switched. KCampbell wrote: "I feared laundry that did not smell fresh and challenges with tough stains. Couldn't have been more wrong! The sheets are incredible." Anita, who had tried other brands first, said: "You can SEE and feel the clean. Clothes look brighter."

For a set-in stain, pre-soak the item in warm water with a sheet dissolved in it before the wash. If you want more detail on cleaning performance, see do laundry detergent sheets work.

    Cost per load

Liquid detergent runs from about 5¢ a load for budget brands like Xtra and Purex to about 20¢ for Tide (Target and Walmart prices, October 2026). Those numbers only hold if you pour exactly the recommended amount every time. Most people pour past the line, especially on a big load, and the jug runs out sooner than the label says.

Sheets take that guesswork away, because you count sheets rather than pour. HeySunday is $15 for 60 sheets on a 30-day subscription, which is 25¢ a sheet, with free shipping. A one-time pack is $25. You can set deliveries to every 30, 60 or 90 days, so if you wash less than a pack a month you aren't stuck with a stockpile.

When you compare sheet brands, check the price per sheet on subscription and the shipping cost, and go by each brand's own dose, since sheet sizes differ.

    Washing machines and water temperature

HeySunday sheets work in HE, top-loading and front-loading machines, in hot or cold water. They're low-sudsing, which is what HE machines need, and they're septic and greywater safe. Liquid works in any machine too, as long as you buy an HE formula for an HE washer.

Put sheets in the drum, on top of the clothes, not in the dispenser drawer. On very short or hand wash cycles, tear the sheet into a few pieces so it dissolves faster. Judy, who washes in cold, wrote in her review: "I wash in cold water and have had no trouble with residue or not dissolving."

    Storage, travel and the jug

Liquid detergent is mostly water, so a jug is heavy to carry home, awkward to pour and easy to spill. It also needs a shelf of its own. A pack of sheets is a flat envelope you can keep on top of the washer or in a drawer.

Monica put it well: "Love the convenience of a flat packet in the cupboard over a cumbersome, sticky, landfill-dwelling plastic jug. HeySunday sheets launder well, and rinse completely. No trip to the store - just open the mailbox, voila!"

Sheets are also easier to travel with. A few in a zip bag cover a week away, with nothing to leak in your luggage. Our guide to laundry while traveling has more.

    Packaging and waste

Most liquid detergent is sold in a plastic jug with a plastic cap. Sheets don't need one. HeySunday ships in a compostable, plastic-free envelope, and because there's no water in the product, a pack is light and flat to ship. The formula is OECD 301B biodegradable and free from phosphates, phthalates, 1,4-dioxane, bleaches, parabens and dyes.

    When liquid still makes sense

    • You pre-treat a lot of greasy stains and like pouring detergent straight on. A dab of dish soap or a stain spray does the same job alongside sheets.
    • You buy the cheapest liquid in bulk, always measure to the line and don't mind the jugs.
    • You wash almost everything on a very short cycle. Sheets still work, but tear them up first.

    Making the switch

Hand placing two HeySunday laundry detergent sheets on top of clothes in a front-loading washer, with the pack on the shelf above

Finish your last jug, then start with the dose table and give it a week or two to find your numbers. A medium, everyday load takes 2 sheets.

HeySunday laundry detergent sheets come in Ocean Breeze and Fragrance Free, and they're rated 4.7 from more than 5,800 ratings. A pack of 60 is $15 on a 30-day subscription with free shipping, and there's a money-back guarantee on your first order.

    Frequently asked questions

Are laundry sheets better than liquid detergent?

Laundry sheets are better than liquid for convenience, storage, travel and packaging, and they clean as well as your old detergent. They come pre-measured, so there's nothing to over-pour, and there's no plastic jug. Liquid is handier for pouring onto stains and can cost less per load if you always measure exactly to the line.

Do laundry sheets clean as well as liquid?

Laundry sheets clean as well as liquid when you use the right number. They're concentrated detergent with surfactants and enzymes, the same kinds of ingredients liquid relies on. Use 1 sheet for a small load, 2 for a medium load and 3 for a large or heavily soiled one. If a load disappoints, check you used enough sheets for its size.

Are laundry sheets cheaper than liquid?

Laundry sheets usually cost more per load than budget liquid detergent poured exactly to the line, which runs about 5¢ to 20¢ a load. HeySunday sheets are 25¢ a sheet on subscription with free shipping. Because sheets are pre-measured, you don't lose money to over-pouring and spills, which push the real cost of liquid up.

Do laundry sheets work in HE washers?

Laundry sheets work in HE washers as long as they're low-sudsing. HeySunday sheets are low-sudsing and work in HE, top-loading and front-loading machines, in hot or cold water. Put the sheets in the drum on top of your clothes rather than in the dispenser drawer, and run your normal cycle.
